Start with a little play.

  1. Listen for a word.

Notice a word your child uses while you play or go about your day.

  2. Add a little more.

Repeat their word with one extra detail. If they say “ball,” you could say “blue ball.”

  3. Keep the conversation going.

Follow what interests them. When they use two words together, try adding another.

Something you could say

Blue ball.

A little more language

Follow their word. Add your own.

Keep the conversation connected to what your child notices. A familiar toy or everyday routine gives you something to talk about together.

  • Name a favorite toy
  • Add its color or size
  • Take another turn listening
